I know one day all our scars will disappear, like the stars at dawn
And all our pain will fade away when morning comes
And on that day when we look backwards we will see that everything is changed
and our trials will be as milestones on the way
And as long as we live, every scar is a bridge to someone’s broken heart
And there’s no greater love than that one who shed His blood for His friends
On that day all of the scales will swing to set all the wrongs to right
All of our tears and all of our fears will take to flight
But until then all of our scars will still remain, but we’ve learned that if we’ll
Open the wounds and share them, then soon they start to heal
As long as we live, every scar is a bridge to someone’s broken heart
And there’s no greater love than that one shed His blood for His friends
We must see that every scar is a bridge, and as long as we live
We must open up these wounds
When someone stands in your shoes and will shed His own blood
There’s no greater love, we must open up our wounds
-For miles, by Thrice

So you are probably wondering why in the world I started this blog entry with this song. This song really connected with me at training camp, and again on Monday after sharing my testimony with my South Africa team. I was introduced to this song, and one of the verses in particular, in a rather interesting way. At training camp, I was taking a shower after a very emotional and spiritual walk on a trail to surrender some difficult things to God. I wore my TWLOHA (To Write Love On Her Arms) shirt that day, and it was inside out hanging on top of the shower curtain. Sometime during my shower, I glanced over and part of what was printed inside the shirt caught my eye,”Every scar is a bridge to someone’s broken heart.” This was totally mind-blowing for me! I took it literally, like it was a message straight from God to me that He wanted me to walk these bridges (I still do believe this)! Problem was, I forgot that all of this happened in the first place, and I went back to my regular life where I was still not completely free from my sins. It is for freedom that Christ has set us free. Stand firm, then, and do not let yourselves be burdened again by a yoke of slavery -Romans 5:1.
In my life I have done things, or things have happened to me, that gave me scars. And this week those scars are being healed to an extent that I didn’t think was possible. I’m finally being freed from myself! I’m realizing what parts of my story were of God, and of the enemy. What things were truth and what things were lies. My leader, Blair, had this to say to me when I told him things I believe, or believed, about myself, God doesn’t speak evil things over us. And not just out of courtesy, but because he doesn’t believe these things is why he doesn’t say them.” And I am learning to be joyful that these things have happened to me. Consider it pure joy, my brothers, whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith develops perseverance. -James 1:2-3. On another note, I am glad these things happened to me because it has made me a stronger person. A person who has compassion and the understanding to help other people, having been through it before and being able to relate. I’m not trying to make it seem like I have gone through so many terrible things and throw myself a pity party, for any means. I’m just excited that God is using my weaknesses and turning them into my strengths!
I want to dissect this song, with you, and see the biblical side of it. I think it is interesting, considering it is a secular song, and beneficial at the same time. Even if you haven’t had any of the same events happen to you that have happened to me, I can guarantee that you have scars of some kind…whether they are tiny, or large. And I hope this will help you in at least the smallest way.

And as long as we live, every scar is a bridge to someone’s broken heart.”

This is the message you heard from the beginning: We should love one another…We know that we have passed from death to life, because we love our brothers. Anyone who does not love remains in death.- 1 John 3:11-14

And our trials will be as milestones on the way”

Dear friends, do not be surprised at the painful trials you are suffering, as though something strange were happening to you. But rejoice that you participate in the sufferings of Christ, so that you may be overjoyed when his glory is revealed. -1 Peter 4:12-14

And there’s no greater love than that one who shed His blood for friends.”

Very rarely will anyone die for a righteous man, though for a good man someone might possibly dare to die. But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us. -Romans 5:7-8

Open the wounds and share them, then soon they start to heal.”

Therefore, confess your sins to each other and pray for each other, so that you may be healed. The prayer of a righteous man is powerful and effective. -James 5:16

All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness.
